Sofia Coppola, Safe Sex Campaign, 1993
This sumptuous portrait of the iconic director in a bath attests to a woman’s right to be powerful, sexy and most of all, herself. Taken before Coppola’s film-making career began when she was still working as an actress and model, she is playfully dressed in red, the wet material highlighting her natural sensuality. Comte creates an image of her strength and poise, relaxing in the bubbles yet holding the viewer’s gaze in a way that shows she is in control.
The portrait comes from his ‘Safe Sex Campaign’ series (1993) which also included portraits of the models Helena Christensen and Carla Bruni. Sofia Coppola is now celebrated internationally as a writer and director of films including The Virgin Suicides (1999), Lost in Translation (2003), Marie Antoinette (2006) and The Beguiled (2017), for which she became the first woman to win the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017.
