Louise Bourgeois, Private Sitting, 1996

One of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century, this is a sensitive depiction of an aging woman. Despite looking away from the camera, Bourgeois is a commanding presence, simply dressed and composed, shot in black and white. Known for her large scale sculptures confronting notions of domesticity, gender and sexuality, Bourgeois understood the importance of presenting herself through the portraits of others. Comte has created a thoughtful portrait, packed with both artists’ wry sense of humour.
