Beauty and Beast, 1996

In this slippery image, it is difficult to know when the snake begins and the woman ends. Caught in an unnerving yet quiet embrace, Comte contrasts the smoothness of their skin against the cracked pattern of the dry earth. This is work was one of a series of images that Comte made on this theme, depicting models and wild animals against an endless natural background. This image in particular demonstrates the artist’s eternal ability to stimulate and provoke.
